A Bright Light Extinguished Too Soon: Remembering Bess Adams
The Mobile, Alabama community suffered an immense loss this week with the tragic passing of 21-year-old Bess Margaret Adams in a devastating car accident late Wednesday evening. By all accounts, Bess’s vibrant spirit touched countless lives over her shortened years. Her sudden death leaves family and friends reeling in grief.
The Fatal Collision
According to reports from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Bess Adams was driving south on Dawes Road in her 2020 Nissan Kicks shortly before midnight on December 14th. Approximately four miles outside the Mobile city limits, her vehicle abruptly veered off the roadway, striking a culvert in the roadside grass.
The Nissan flipped violently multiple times before coming to rest on its roof. Tragically, Bess was ejected from the overturned car, not wearing her seatbelt at the moment of collision. First responders rushed her to University Hospital in downtown Mobile, but medical staff could not revive the gravely injured 21-year-old.
ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division continues investigating the exact circumstances around this heartbreaking incident.
Bess Margaret Adams, 21, of Mobile, Alabama passed away on December 14th 2023. The family and loved ones of Bess want to bring acknowledgment to her life by celebrating her this Monday, December 18th at The Battle House Mobile in the Crystal Ballroom. The family will be receiving guests starting at 4:00, with the celebration of life starting at 5:00.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Mobile Christian School in honor of Bess.
A Talented, Adventurous Soul
According to friends, Bess Margaret Adams lived everyday to its fullest. She attended Theodore High School where she was active in student council, played saxophone in the school band, and competed on the swim team. An avid outdoor enthusiast, Bess loved kayaking, hiking, and rock climbing adventures with her friends every chance she got.
Bess went on to study marketing at University of South Alabama, wrapping up the fall semester just days ago. Professor Tina Caldwell recalls Bess as one of her most talented and driven students. “”I still remember reviewing her final capstone presentation and being amazed at her creativity,”” remarked Caldwell. “”Bess simply radiated passion and had such a clear vision of the future she wanted to create.””
That future, tragically cut short by her untimely passing, leaves family, professors and classmates searching for meaning in this sudden loss. Beyond her school activities, Bess volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club, walked dogs at the animal shelter, and served as a peer counselor to underclassmen students.
The immense hole left by her absence testifies to the joy and inspiration she sprinkled so freely.
Grieving With Grace
In the painful aftermath, Mobile community leaders are rallying to support the Adams family during this period of profound grief. Counselors and religious leaders made themselves available to Theodore High students today struggling to process this news.
Father James Wilson spent Thursday with the Adams family helping plan upcoming memorial services. “”In tragedies like this, we grieve deeply because we loved deeply,”” said Father Wilson during his homily Sunday morning. “”But we must also give thanks for this precious gift of Bess’s life and spirit however brief…for she touched this world dearly during her short time here.””
A candlelight vigil in Bess’s memory will take place tonight at Spring Hill College where friends will share memories and favorite stories. Bess’s memorial and funeral services are slated for next Tuesday and Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations to the Bess Margaret Adams Memorial Scholarship Fund at USA College of Business to support aspiring female students.
Though Bess’s promising life ended abruptly, her radiant smile and zest for living on in memory – a guiding light in times of darkness. Just weeks ago in a birthday Instagram post, Bess quoted Dr. Seuss: “”Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”” May her contagious smile lift spirits now in this time of grief, as we carry her inspirational torch forward.
